Who owns the drains?

From 1st October property owners are no longer responsible for certain sewer pipes that connect their homes to public sewers. New legislation has transferred responsibility for these pipes, called private sewers and lateral drains (the sections of sewer pipe or drain shared with another person’s property, or run through another person’s land) to the Water Authority. Property owners were often unaware that they were responsible for these pipes until there was a blockage, potentially involving Environmental Health, the service of Notices, repair bills, confusion and possible disputes between neighbours!

Property owners are still responsible for private drains, also privately owned septic tanks and cesspits and their connecting pipe work.

Southern Water has produced a film which explains the changes and thebackground to them, including animations showing the changes for themain property types – click here Who Owns The Sewers
